Dolmabahçe Palace is one of the most impressing and beautiful pieces of architecture along the Bosphorus. It was completed in 1856 by Garabet Balyan and his son Nigogayos Balyan – under the reign of Sultan Abdülmecid I – in a synthesis of European architectural styles. The wall and ceiling decorations of the palace are the work of Italian and French artists who employed large quantities of gold leaf.
